Pocket Reduction Surgery

As gum disease advances, the periodontal tissues that support the teeth can begin to pull away, leaving pockets that can collect bacteria and become infected. Left untreated, advanced periodontitis can lead to gum recession and tooth loss. Dr. Eric Herrington is a board-certified periodontist who serves patients in Laurel, Hattiesburg, and Meridian, MS. He can treat this dental problem using pocket reduction surgery.

Dr. Herrington graduated Magna Cum Laude from Millsaps College and was honored with the AAP award for Outstanding Achievement in Periodontics. If you are suffering with gum disease, trust your care to a leader in the field of dentistry.

Periodontal pockets threaten the foundation of your smile and should be resolved as promptly as possible.

Are You a Candidate for Pocket Reduction Surgery?

Candidates for this restorative treatment have advanced periodontitis that cannot be treated through dental cleanings. Pocket reduction surgery is often used as a last resort to prevent the need for tooth extraction. During your exam at our dental practice, Dr. Herrington will measure the depth of your pockets to determine if you require surgery. Depending on the extent of your gum disease, you may also be a candidate for bone grafting or a soft tissue graft to replace compromised tissue.

By working with Dr. Herrington, you can feel confident knowing that a board-certified periodontist is helping you to overcome gum disease and experience the benefits of a healthy smile.

I recently had a wisdom tooth removed by Dr. Herrington, and was very nervous about the procedure. He was understanding as was his staff and made it a very comfortable experience. Quick, and very little pain involved. I would highly recommend him for any dental work that you may need! VIEW ON GOOGLE +

Treatment Overview

Our office can provide oral sedation or IV sedation for patients who have difficulty sitting still or experience dental phobia. Your gums will be thoroughly numbed using local anesthesia. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Herrington will make small incisions in your gums to access the infected pockets.

Bacteria will be removed from the infected areas, and the surface of the tooth root will be smoothed to foster the reattachment of the gum tissue. Often, a special anti-bacterial solution is used to thoroughly clean the area. The incisions will be sutured following the procedure. Patients should rest for the remainder of the day following their treatment. Between five to 10 days following the procedure, your sutures will be removed. During the follow-up visit, Dr. Herrington will monitor your healing.
