The Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST™) is a modern, minimally invasive treatment for receding gums. Instead of harvesting tissue from the palate and stitching it into place, your periodontist uses a tiny entry point to gently reposition your existing gum tissue back over exposed roots.
How it works
- A pinhole-sized opening is made above the receded area
- Specialized instruments loosen and slide the gum tissue downward
- Small collagen strips are placed under the gum to hold the new position
- No scalpel, no sutures, no donor tissue from your palate
What patients notice immediately
- A more even, youthful smile by the end of the appointment
- Less root sensitivity within days
- Almost no swelling or bruising
- No restrictions on talking or smiling
Recovery
Most patients use only ibuprofen for a day. Soft foods for 48 hours, then back to normal. We see you for a one-week check to confirm everything is settling well.
Who is a good candidate?
PST works best for moderate gum recession on multiple adjacent teeth. Severe single-tooth recession or very thin tissue may still call for a traditional soft tissue graft. We will evaluate which approach gives you the longest-lasting result.
How long results last
A 5-year clinical study showed PST results held up just as well as conventional grafting. The biggest factor is treating the cause—aggressive brushing, grinding, or untreated gum disease—so the recession does not return.
