LANAP® vs. Traditional Gum Surgery: A Less Painful Path to Healthy Gums

By Dr. J. Eric Herrington · February 2, 2026 · 6 min read

For decades, the only way to treat moderate-to-severe periodontal disease was traditional flap surgery: peel back the gums, clean the roots and bone, then suture the gums back. It works—but the recovery is uncomfortable. LANAP® (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) offers a modern alternative with results just as strong and a recovery most patients describe as "easy."

How traditional flap surgery works

Your periodontist makes small incisions and reflects the gum tissue away from the teeth. Diseased tissue and tartar are removed, the underlying bone is reshaped, and the gums are stitched back into place. It is highly effective but can mean noticeable swelling, gum recession after healing, and several days of restricted activity.

How LANAP works

LANAP uses a specific wavelength of laser light that selectively removes diseased, infected tissue and bacteria while leaving healthy tissue alone. No scalpels and no sutures are needed. The laser also stimulates a clot that seals the pocket, encouraging your body to regenerate lost bone and ligament.

Side-by-side: what to expect

  • Anesthesia: Local for both; sedation available for either
  • Procedure time: ~2 hours per arch (LANAP) vs. 1–2 hours per quadrant (flap)
  • Sutures: None with LANAP; multiple with flap surgery
  • Recovery: Most LANAP patients return to work the next day; flap surgery often requires 2–4 days of downtime
  • Post-op recession: Minimal with LANAP; more common with flap surgery
  • Bone regeneration: LANAP is FDA-cleared for true regeneration of the attachment apparatus

Who is the better candidate for LANAP?

LANAP is an excellent choice for most adults with moderate-to-severe periodontitis, including patients on blood thinners, patients with diabetes, and anyone who wants a faster recovery. We will confirm your candidacy after a periodontal exam and 3D imaging.

What about cost and insurance?

LANAP is often comparable in cost to traditional surgery, and many insurance plans now cover it under standard periodontal codes. Our team will verify your benefits before treatment so there are no surprises.
